If you recently made a purchase from boAt and provided them with your personal information such as contact numbers and email addresses, there’s a possibility that your data could be circulating on the internet, particularly on the dark web. According to a Forbes India report, the data of approximately 7.5 million boAt customers has been compromised and is being sold on the dark web.

India Today Tech has reached out to boAt, a prominent company specializing in smartwatches and audio products, for their response to this report and the potential data breach. We will update this information as soon as we receive a comment from them.

This incident, if confirmed, wouldn’t be the first time that the personal details of millions of customers have been traded online. The report regarding the boAt data breach indicates that sensitive customer information such as names, addresses, contact numbers, email addresses, and customer IDs are being offered for sale on the dark web.

The dark web, accessible only via the TOR network, serves as a haven for cybercriminals and hosts various illegal activities, including the sale of stolen data. It features web forums and communities where hackers and cybercriminals can trade illicit information.

Previously, there have been instances of data breaches in India resulting in the exposure of millions of Indians’ personal information, including Aadhaar numbers, on dark web forums.

While some of the stolen data, including that reportedly obtained from boAt servers, may already be publicly available (such as phone numbers), consolidating it in one location facilitates cybercriminals in perpetrating phishing, social engineering, and other online and telephone scams.

This reported breach also underscores the deficiency in India’s regulations concerning the obligation of companies to disclose and address data breaches. In numerous other countries worldwide, tech companies are mandated to inform their customers in the event of a data breach.
