New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a warning on Wednesday, stating that certain businesses, organizations, and people are pretending to be from TRAI when they call the public or customers, threatening to disconnect their mobile numbers because they are being used to send unsolicited messages.
These businesses, organizations, and people further assert that the public’s Aadhaar numbers were obtained through SIM card purchases and are currently being utilized for illicit purposes. These businesses, organizations, and people are also attempting to dupe the general public and customers into joining a Skype video call in order to prevent mobile number disconnections.
“TRAI hereby notifies the general public that it does not block or disconnect any specific telecom customer’s mobile number. To disconnect a mobile number, TRAI never calls or sends a message. Any agency contacted by TRAI for such purposes is not authorized to contact customers; all such calls are unlawful and should be handled in accordance with the law. Consequently, any call or message purporting to be from TRAI ought to be regarded as possibly fraudulent,” TRAI issued a statement.
As per Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR) 2018 of the TRAI, Access Service Providers are responsible for taking appropriate actions against the mobile numbers involved in sending unsolicited communications.
Affected persons may take up the matter with the concerned Service Providers directly on their respective Customer Service Center numbers or on National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: https://cybercrime.gov.in or call Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930.
