A 27-year-old man from Shivamogga, identified as K.A. Murthy, has landed behind bars for his involvement in a string of chain snatching and theft cases. Once a well-earning employee at a reputed tech firm in Bengaluru, Murthy’s life spiraled out of control after falling prey to the lure of online gambling.
Despite drawing a lucrative salary, he began wagering large sums on betting platforms, eventually losing several lakhs. His addiction soon impacted his family — his father, Annappa, had no choice but to sell their ancestral land to clear the mounting debts.
However, even after that financial lifeline, Murthy couldn’t shake off his compulsive habits. Desperate for fast cash, he shifted to crime, targeting lone women and households. Among his offenses was a bold chain snatching incident at the Angala Parameshwari temple. He also reportedly broke into homes in Konanakunte, Avalahalli, and Sadduguntarpalya.
A complaint lodged at the Magadi Road police station set the wheels in motion. Authorities apprehended Murthy shortly after he struck at the temple, managing to catch him in the act. Upon his arrest, police confiscated approximately 245 grams of stolen gold jewellery, estimated at around ₹16.75 lakh.
Murthy was brought before the court on June 17 and has since been placed in judicial custody, pending further investigation.
His story serves as a grim reminder of how unchecked addiction can destroy careers, families, and futures.
