In a heartbreaking incident reported late Saturday night, two 22-year-old youths lost their lives after slipping into a farm pond near Yadavala village in Shivamogga taluk. The location falls under the jurisdiction of the Kumsi police station.
The victims were identified as Gautam, a native of Yadavala, and Chiranjeevi, a resident of Kumbargundi in Shivamogga city. Both were part of a group that had gathered near an orchard owned by Gautam’s family.
According to sources, the group—comprising nearly ten friends—had visited the farm late at night. While trying to fetch water from the nearby pond, one of them accidentally fell in. In a desperate attempt to save his friend, Chiranjeevi jumped in but tragically met the same fate.
Another friend who also slipped into the water managed to survive by swimming ashore, narrowly escaping the tragedy. Upon being informed, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department rushed to the site and retrieved the bodies after an intensive search.
The remains of the deceased were shifted to the mortuary at McGann Government Hospital in Shivamogga for postmortem examination.
The tragic mishap has cast a pall of gloom over both the village and the city area, as friends and families struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.
Police officials have initiated an inquiry to understand the full sequence of events and confirm whether any negligence was involved.
