Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the flag for ninth straight year. India celebrated the 76th Independence Day on August 15, 2022. Since the inception of Indian Independence Day celebration, the tradition of Indian Prime Ministers hoisting the National Flag at Red Fort, New Delhi and addressing the nation has continued.
In the past 75 years India witnessed the total of 15 Prime Ministers heading the Government and representing the people, out of which maximum leaders got the opportunity to hoist the National Flag in Red fort on August 15.
The first PM of Independent India, Indian National Congress Leader who is also the longest serving Indian Prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has hoisted the national flag for the record 17 times between 1947 and 1964.
Indira Gandhi, the only Women Prime Minister of the country, hoisted the tricolour flag 16 times. The INC Leader served as Prime minister during two occasions between 1966-77 and 1980-84.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, the INC leader who also served as Governor of RBI, Ministry of Finance and served as Prime Minister between 2004 and 2014, hoisted the flag at Red fort for 10 straight years.
Narendra Modi, who is currently serving as the Prime minister of India in his second term, has been the Prime minister since 2014. The BJP Leader has hoisted the flag in the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day for the ninth straight year now.
Atal Bihari Vajapayee, BJP Prime minister hoisted the national flag six times. Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao hoisted the flag at Red Fort five times each. Lal Bahadur Singh, V. P. Singh, Charan Singh, H. D. Deve Gowda and I. K Gujral hoisted the flag once at the Red Fort. Prime Ministers Gulzarilal Nanda and Chandrashekhar never got the opportunity to hoist the National Flag because of their short tenure.
