Mangaluru: Commuting inside Mangaluru city has turned out to be a matter of concern for everyone following an increase in the number of cars and two-wheelers. Frustrated commuters who squeeze their way through traffic congestion often tend to jump the signals where traffic lights are either absent or do not function.
What would you do when all three lights turn on or off at the same time at a traffic signal? Red says “stop”, amber says “be ready” before green gives the “go”. The commuter is encountered with a classic confusion, “To move or not to move…”
An exclusive video by Newskarnataka shows the failure of traffic lights on the busy Bunts’ Hostel Road, the traffic policeman who is hardly visible and the woes of the commuters in such a scenario.

All three traffic lights turn on and off simultaneously here at Bunts Hostel road. The old traffic policeman standing at the corner seems least bothered about the cranky traffic lights and the consequent frequent jams.
One of the commuters spoke to Newskarnataka and said, “It is very confusing. Here the traffic lights are not working. These lights glow simultaneously and once, I almost met with an accident. “
A bus driver said, “The lights are not functioning from a long time. We often get into verbal spats with other drivers with this problem.”
When Newskarnataka contacted DCP (Crime and Traffic) Sanjeev Patil, he said, “The department had approached the person who maintains the signals and very soon the traffic lights would be set right.”
However, this road is not an exception. This is the case with most of the signals in the city! The traffic lights are either absent or defunct, which makes every commuter blink with confusion on the road. Though Mangaluru has entered the central government’s smart city list, basic issues like cranky or defunct traffic signal lights continue to haunt the city.
