Mangaluru: The Karnataka government is contemplating the construction of new ports in Karwar and Mangaluru, as part of a broader plan for the comprehensive development of coastal districts. Mankal Vaidya, the Fisheries Minister, unveiled these ambitious plans following a meeting at Vidhansouda, with a specific focus on Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts.

The development strategy outlined during the meeting encompasses key sectors such as fisheries, inland waterways, and ports. Authorities are devising plans to enhance inland water transport, boost fishing tourism, and establish new ports in Karwar and Mangaluru. Although the estimated cost awaits the completion of a detailed project report, the investment could range from one thousand crores to a substantial amount for the construction of the ports.

As part of a drive to promote tourism, the government has identified 13 islands in these districts, exploring potential public-private partnerships to augment tourism activities.

Addressing the concerns of the fishing community, Minister Vaidya announced an increase in the annual diesel quantity allocated to fishermen and provisions for selling 200 litres of white petrol at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per litre for 10 months. This initiative aims to support fishermen, especially in the absence of the central government’s annual kerosene oil distribution.

In another significant development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to launch fishing vehicles in Bangalore on World Fisheries Day, November 21. These vehicles, equipped with fridges, weighing machines, and other amenities, will facilitate the direct sale of coastal fish to enthusiasts in the city. Interested individuals can apply for these vehicles, paying a security deposit and a monthly fee of three thousand rupees. The initiative aims to make coastal fish more accessible to city residents, with the initial phase involving 150 operational fish vehicles in Bengaluru.
