Meet Yogitha Surana, a 19-year-old girl from Chittor, who is about to embark on a unique journey. Despite being born into a wealthy Marwadi jeweler family, Yogitha has decided to leave behind all the modern comforts and live a simple life. Imagine giving up fans, lights, toothbrushes, and even shampoo – that’s the plan!
Yogitha, the daughter of a Rajasthani Jain, could have easily taken over the family business. But she’s chosen a different path – one that leads to becoming a nun. Instead of pursuing the desire of becoming a pilot, CA, or IAS officer, Yogitha wants to detach herself from worldly desires and achieve ‘moksha’ or salvation.
This decision initially shocked her parents, but her mother eventually understood and supported her. Jainism requires both parents to accept their child’s decision willingly. In a grand ceremony next week in Hyderabad, Yogitha will transform from a girl with worldly desires to a nun, giving up her finest clothes for a life of simplicity.
A religious procession with elephants, camels, and horses will mark this transition. Yogitha, who speaks Hindi, Telugu, and English, has spent a year preparing for this spiritual journey. Although she’s left her studies behind, she believes that inner peace is more valuable than any worldly possession. With about 50,000 people expected to attend the ceremony, Yogitha’s story is an inspiring tale of making unconventional life choices.
