In a major success, the District Reserve Guard (DRG) team in Bijapur thwarted a potential Naxal attack by discovering and neutralizing deadly explosives planted by Naxalites in key areas of the district. The operation, which took place across Gorna, Mankeli, and Ishulnar areas, was part of routine de-mining efforts.
During the de-mining operation on Sunday, the DRG team uncovered three 5-kg Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the Mankeli road, hidden on the footpath of an unpaved road. These IEDs were connected to a pressure switch system, designed to detonate upon activation. Additionally, a 10-kg IED rigged with a live High-Explosive (HE) bomb was found—marking the first discovery of such a device in the Bijapur area.
An HE bomb, as explained by the Ordnance Directorate of India, is a highly effective mortar bomb used for area targeting and anti-personnel purposes. Upon detonation, it causes significant destruction. The Naxalites had intended to trigger the bomb through the IED, but the swift response of the DRG and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) successfully neutralized the explosives, preventing a potentially deadly attack.
Though the Bijapur Police and security forces have not yet issued an official statement, the operation has been hailed as a critical intervention in ensuring the safety of the region.
