A man, identified as Thomas Routt Jr., has been apprehended by authorities following the tragic deaths of a Wisconsin couple inside a bar. Police reports indicate that Routt admitted to the killings, citing robbery as his motive for taking the lives of Gina and Emerson Weingart, who had recently gotten married. The incident occurred on February 1, with Routt now facing charges of two counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
According to witnesses, Routt spent around 30 minutes playing a video game at the bar before pulling out a gun and demanding the couple and another individual to remain still. After allegedly stealing a small amount of cash from the bar’s drawer, Routt opened fire, prompting the eyewitnesses to flee and notify emergency services.
Routt’s arrest on February 4, carried out by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, revealed that he was already on parole for a previous offense. Subsequent investigations led to the recovery of a handgun and ammunition, which Routt confessed to disposing of in a nearby trash receptacle.
During a recent court appearance, emotions ran high as Jeff Weingart, the father of one of the victims, condemned Routt as a “monster.” Routt’s attorney has stated their intention to plead not guilty, expressing interest in potential surveillance footage that could shed light on the events leading up to the tragedy.
Routt’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, as legal proceedings continue in this harrowing case.
