According to state media, Saudi Arabia executed seven people on Tuesday for “terrorism” offenses, marking the largest number of executions in a single day since 81 people were executed in March 2022.
Citing the interior ministry of the Gulf state, the official Saudi Press Agency said that the seven had been found guilty of “creating and financing terrorist organizations and entities.”
After executing 170 people in 2023, Saudi Arabia, one of the countries that uses the death penalty the most, has now executed 29 people this year.
The execution of 81 people in one day almost two years ago caused international outrage for the conservative kingdom, which is known for its practice of beheadings.
Although the identities of the seven people who were executed on Tuesday were withheld, their titles and names suggested they were Saudi nationals.
They were found guilty of endangering national security, “adopting a terrorist approach that calls for bloodshed, establishing and financing terrorist organizations and entities, and communicating and dealing with them with the aim of disrupting the security and stability of society,” according to the report.
