Mangaluru: The Department of Civil Engineering, NITK, (National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Surathkal) organised a three-day International Conference on “Climate Resilient Construction and Building Materials” from March 3 to 5, 2023. The conference witnessed more than 280 participants including practitioners, industrialists, scientists, researchers, academicians & students from all over the world.
The conference aimed at raising awareness and adopting sustainable and climate-resilient construction methods and building materials for infrastructure developments. Since the effects of climate change are increasingly evident, it is essential for civil engineers to understand the importance of using materials that are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
By utilizing materials that are designed to be more resilient to the effects of climate change, civil engineers can help ensure that the structures they build are able to withstand the changing climate and remain safe and secure for years to come. Additionally, using climate-resilient materials will help reduce the cost of construction and maintenance, as well as minimize the environmental impact of the structures.
Renowned researchers from all over the world were invited to present their ideas and research developments in the area of climate-resilient construction and building materials since climate change is very evident, and the effects of the same are much visible, therefore, in order to mitigate the further damage to our environment, researchers, & civil engineers should adopt sustainable methods.
The chief guest for the conference was Dr Venkatesh Kodur, Distinguished Professor (Michigan State University, Lansing, USA), and Dr Vasant Matsagar, Dogra Chair Professor (IIT Delhi). Dr Biswajit Bhattacharjee, Emeritus Professor (IIT Delhi), was the Guest of Honor. Prof. S. M. Kulkarni, NITK Director (I/C) was the Chief Patron. During the inauguration held on 03.03.2023, Dr Biswajit Bhattacharjee was honoured for his enormous contributions to the area of civil engineering by the dignitaries.
Prof. Biswajeet Bhattacharjee (IIT Delhi) while addressing the gathering said “Climate Resilient Construction and Building Materials” is a timely event which addresses the challenges associated with Climate change and its impact on infrastructure developments. I urge all young researchers to develop and use Sustainable Climate Resilient construction and building materials for the Sustainable development of the Construction Industry”.
The conference was a part of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK project. The principal investigators and organizers of the conference were Dr Bibhuti Bhusan Das, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department, NITK, Prof. Leon Black, from the University of Leeds UK, Dr Salim Barbhuiya, from University of East London, UK, and Dr Parameshwar Hiremath from NIT Srinagar. Prof. Venkatesh Kudor, from Michigan State University, USA, and Prof. Sudehirkumar Barai (Director of BITS Pilani) were the invited Plenary Speakers. A total of 11 keynote addresses were delivered by well-known speakers from Tier 1 Institutes, renowned universities/ Institutes of international importance.
