On its website on Sunday, the Election Commission published updated information about electoral bonds that were bought by private citizens and redeemed by political parties.

Data on electoral bonds for the period after April 2019 that the poll body obtained from the State Bank of India was made public last week.

On April 12, 2019, the Supreme Court received data from the Election Commission regarding electoral bonds that were purchased under a sealed cover. It’s likely that the recently disclosed data refers to electoral bonds bought before April 2019.

Political parties submitted electoral bond data in sealed covers in accordance with the Supreme Court’s temporary order dated April 12, 2019, according to the poll panel.

Following the Supreme Court’s directive from March 15, 2024, the Court’s registry returned physical copies and a digitised record on a pen drive in a sealed cover. The Election Commission has now uploaded this digitised data onto its website for public access, it said in the statement.

Key takeaways from ECI electoral bonds data

• The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) encashed electoral bonds amounting to 6,986.5 crore, with the highest sum of 2,555 crore received in the financial year 2019-20.

• Congress redeemed a total of 1,334.35 crore through electoral bonds.

• The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) encashed electoral bonds worth 944.5 crore, the YSR Congress 442.8 crore, and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) 181.35 crore.
