New Delhi: Update: Death toll rises to 43 in Anaj Mandi incident

A major fire broke out in a factory in a crowded area near central Delhi. Most of the people who died are suspected to be labourers who were fast asleep inside the factory located in Anaj Mandi on Rani Jhansi Road.

The fire broke out at 5 am, it is said. The cause of the fire is not known, officials said, adding that over 56 people have been rescued so far. Thirty fire trucks are at the site and have taken the situation under control.

Twenty people were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Hindu Rao Hospital, a fire department official said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tweet read: “V v tragic news. Rescue operations going on. Firemen doing their best. Injured are being taken to hospitals,” he tweeted.

The traffic police have asked people not to use Rani Jhansi flyover near New Delhi railway station as the road has been closed due to the incident.
