Mangaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his late father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Saturday May 20, describing him as a visionary leader and a wonderful father whom he misses.

“My father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India. He was a compassionate & kind man, and a wonderful father to me and Priyanka, who taught us the value of forgiveness and empathy. I dearly miss him and fondly remember the time we spent together,” stated his tweet.

In the video, he says, “This is what really helped my father. I could see this process taking place where he would go and meet people, get into their details, understand their details. And look at the big picture.”

The video also had an old speech by Rahul saying that Rajiv ji had a vision for 21st century India. He had a vision for telecommunications, for Panchayati Raj, for bringing women to the forefront of politics. He had big dreams and the Congress party helped turn his dreams for India into reality. He empowered the people, the poor, and gave them a say in the government.”

“On his death anniversary, tributes to former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi,” tweeted PM Modi.

A Twitter user stated that Rajiv Gandhi was gentle and kind. “He was not interested in politics but circumstances pulled him but he excelled in it. Before finishing his dream of India to be a developed nation people took away his life. Great loss. Pranaam,” he wrote.

Another person said that the former Prime Minister is the one who inspired him to become a Pilot and also take up politics as a medium to public service.

“A visionary smiling statesman always remembered for his Local government empowerment, women empowerment, health and vaccination, education to needy by Navodaya, IT, foreign policy etc. works,” commented a user.

Another user mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi’s vision, his simplicity, his principles and his commitment to the service of India cannot be forgotten. “He was one of the founders of modern, secular India. Every PM has united people,” he added.

“I dread this date of 21st May which Rajiv Gandhi fell to the gruesome assassination of a suicide bomber. There are some more politically insignificant but socially significant personalities who passed away on the 21st of May month. Hope this jinxed date passes off today peacefully,” was a comment from a Twitter user.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991. Fourteen others were killed, including the suicide bomber Dhanu.
