Kozhikode: After the failure of slope protection works along the Chengala–Neeleshwaram stretch of NH-66 near Cherkkala in Kasaragod on Monday, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken stern action against the contractor. Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd has been barred from bidding for NHAI projects for the next year.

An official release stated that the collapse was due to faulty design, inadequate slope safeguards, and a poorly planned drainage system. A show-cause notice was also issued to the firm, along with a financial penalty that could reach ₹9 crore.

The project, developed under the hybrid annuity model, mandates the contractor to maintain the road for 15 years. NHAI has directed the company to reconstruct the damaged slope protection at its own expense.

To assess the situation thoroughly, an expert committee has been formed. It includes a senior scientist from the Central Road Research Institute, a retired professor from IIT-Palakkad, and officials from the Geological Survey of India. The team will review the design and suggest corrective measures.

NHAI emphasized its commitment to ensuring safety and structural integrity across highway projects, stating that all necessary steps will be taken to rectify the current issue and prevent future failures.
