Dharwad: Fakira Dingaleshwar Swamiji of Shirahatti Bhavikymath, who has been critical of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, accusing him of bias and injustice towards the Lingayat community, has said that devotees have urged him to contest as an independent candidate for the Dharwad Lok Sabha seat. And decision in this regard would be announced in Bengaluru soon.

Speaking to the press after a meeting with devotees in Dharwad on Tuesday, the Swamiji stated that many devotees have suggested he should enter the election fray, similar to Swamijis in North India who have ventured into politics.

Following a Chinthan Manthan meeting on March 27, the Swamiji set a deadline of March 31 for the BJP leadership to change Joshi’s candidacy, alleging injustice to the Lingayat community. He criticized Joshi for being intoxicated with power and lacking respect for the community.

On March 31, the Swamiji announced a meeting with devotees in Dharwad to decide on the future course of action. He stated that while many devotees have expressed support for his candidacy, he would carefully consider all suggestions before making a final decision, which would be announced in Bengaluru soon. He affirmed his commitment to continuing the fight for justice.

In Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency Lingayat voters have dominance with over 5.50 lakh, the constituency has over 16 lakh voters. The potential entry of Swamiji into the electoral fray may alter the dynamics, potentially splitting the Lingayat votes. It remains to be seen who would benefit from this shift, whether it be Congress candidate Vinod Asooti or Pralhad Joshi. Time will tell.
