Vijayapura: In the biggest ever programme to return the stolen objects from the offenders to the owners, the District Police handed over Rs. 2.33 Crore worth valuables to the owners on Monday November 29.

“In the history of the District, this is the first time that the police are returning valuables to the owners in such a massive quantity,” said Superintendent of Police H. D. Anand Kumar.

Addressing a press vonference to inform about the event to return the valuables, he said that the materials including gold, silver, motorcycles and other gadgets were stolen in the last one year by over 450 accused in various  cases. He said that some 252 cases were filed in various police stations of the district in connectuon with burglary, theft etc.

Mentioning about the items, he said that over 2 kgs of gold, over 4 kgs of silver, cash worth Rs. 5.21 lakh, 110 motorcycles and 12 four-wheelers have been recovered from the accused. Congratulating the officials involved in detecting the cases, Anand Kumar announced suitable rewards to all such officials.

When asked why police took one year to return the valuables, he said that the police had to go through several legal procedures, including availing permission from the Court to return the valuables. “ We have to take the cases to their logical end before returning the recovered valuables to their owners, thus it takes sometime,” he said.

To a question, he made it clear that since it is difficult for the police to completely curb the offence with the limited force, he sought the cooperation of the people. He said that people should remain alert and follow the advice of the police in safeguarding their valuables from the thieves. He also admitted that the police might not have recovered every material stolen by the accused as often the offenders sell off the valuables or spend the cash.

Later, he handed over the valuables to the owners who had come to the meeting hall of the police department where the materials were kept.
