Bengaluru: Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra said the State government would initiate steps to appoint a new Lokayukta at the earliest in the wake of Justice Y Bhaskar Rao resigning from his post.
He said that the government will write to Chief Justice of Karnataka Subhro Kamal Mukherjee urging him to recommend names for appointing new Lokayukta.
Jayachandra said the motion recently admitted by the Legislative Assembly on the removal of the Lokayukta would automatically become null and void following the resignation of Justice Rao.
Meanwhile, former Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde has firmly demanded the immediate arrest of Justice Y Bhaskar Rao.
He said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing corruption within the Lokayukta, should arrest Justice Y Bhaskar Rao in the wake of his resignation.
Justice Hegde said the resignation of Justice Rao had come at a time when the Assembly Speaker was convinced of charges against him. Once the matter reaches the Chief Justice of the High Court, he will refer it to a 3-judge committee.
Supreme Court counsel K V Dhananjay too said Justice Rao should have been arrested long ago.
