Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has selected five firms, including one named after the late journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, to establish fact-checking units aimed at combating the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms.
Following an expression of interest (EOI) process initiated by the IT-BT (Information Technology and Business Transformation) department in October, the government received bids from seven companies and subsequently chose Gauri Media, Logically Infomedia Private Limited, Trylika Technology Limited, OW Data Leads Private Limited, and Newsplus Communications.
Logically, Trylike, and OW Data Leads will operate across fact-checking, analytics, and capacity-building teams, while Gauri Media, established as a trust after Gauri Lankesh’s murder in 2017, was chosen for its proficiency in the Kannada language. IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge mentioned that, in addition to these companies, independent fact-checkers from various backgrounds would be onboarded to assist the government in combating misinformation.
