Bengaluru: The onion rate continues to bring tears in the eyes of the consumers. In the city markets, the retail rate is now hovering between Rs.100 and Rs.110. With the new crop expected only after January 2020, the price is expected to remain the same.

According to the customers, since Tuesday, the onion is sold at Rs.100 in all the retail stores of the city and even the pushcarts. In malls and supermarkets, it is Rs.110 per kilogram.

According to the sellers, even though the onion has been imported from the Egyptian market and France, there is no respite. “Due to the crop loss in the North Karnataka region and Maharastra which are the two major onion producing regions of the country, the price is skyrocketing,” explained Raghuvamsh Sonar, a wholesale trader from the city.

“The new crop is expected in the first week of January. At that time, the price is expected to come down below Rs.40 due to the oversupply. This year crop is good due to availability of water,” he said.

According to the authorities, the onion rate is skyrocketing in all the districts. “The imported onion is not liked by the consumers. So everyone is looking for the locally grown onion which is in huge demand. So, the price is expected to remain above Rs.100 for the next four weeks,” informed an officer from the state agriculture department.
