Siddaramaiah takes steps to clean up Bellandur polluted lake

Bengaluru: In a fresh effort to clean the polluted Bellandur lake of Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here on Saturday decided to check the stench and foam emanating from grimy lake through short-term and long-term measures.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah chaired a meeting with senior cabinet ministers and officers of BBMP, BDA and BMRDA, on infrastructure projects and garbage spillover here on Saturday. CM in the meeting also sought an update on problems faced by residents living near the polluted lake.  

Officers of BBMP told Siddaramaiah that large quantity of effluents flowing into the water body was the cause for pollution.In order to check the effluents, sewage treatment plants (STP) would be established at four locations at a cost of Rs 350 crore with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) providing Rs 100 crore, and funds from the Union government under Amruth scheme, they added.

Besides, to prevent further pollution of the lake, civic authorities have decided to direct apartment complexes to install STPs and this activity would be monitored by special squads. BDA has prepared a detailed project report on long term measures to rejuvenate Bellanduru lake, and this would be submitted to the Union government for fiscal aid, chief secretary Koushik Mukherjee told the media after the meeting.  

The government’s new minister Bengaluru development, K.J. George, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, food and civil supplies minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, Mayor Manjunath, BBMP commissioner Kumar Naik and  senior officials of BDA and BBMP attended the meeting.
