Bengaluru: With deficient rainfall in the State and Cauvery going dry, the State government might soon inform the Supreme Court that it cannot continue to release 2,000 cusecs of water a day to Tamil Nadu. The SC has directed Karnataka to release 2,000 cusecs a day to the neighbouring State on October 18.
According to sources, the Water Resources Department has suggested the need for filing a petition in the apex court after it held discussions with the State’s legal team in New Delhi. The reason the State might cite for its inability to release 2,000 cusecs of water a day to Tamil Nadu is deficient rainfall.
The residents of urban centres including Bengaluru will face severe drinking water shortage as the water levels in four reservoirs has depleted. Thus, the release of 2,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu has to be stopped, said official sources.
