Bengaluru’s car wash sector is grappling with the ramifications of the severe water crisis plaguing the city. As traditional car wash services reliant on high-pressure water hoses face disruptions due to drying borewells and stringent regulations from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), businesses are scrambling for solutions, with some even forced to shut down.

The BWSSB’s crackdown on using drinking water for non-essential purposes, such as car washing, has resulted in hefty penalties of Rs 5,000 for violations. This enforcement, combined with dwindling water sources, has prompted a shift in the industry, with establishments exploring alternative methods to conserve water.

Ashraf Hussain, a worker at K S Water Service, expressed the challenges faced by traditional car wash businesses. Despite initially resorting to water tanker services, they were warned by the BWSSB, leading to a complete suspension of car wash operations and a significant decline in customers.

In response to the crisis, some establishments have begun advertising dry car wash services as a viable alternative. Harish from Flip Care Washing highlighted their waterless car washing service, which utilizes minimal water and a specialized solution, prioritizing both water conservation and hygiene.

Meanwhile, establishments like Amruth Car Wash claim minimal impact from the water crisis, as they rely on water-efficient methods and have secured tanker services to sustain operations.

While the water crisis continues to pose challenges for Bengaluru’s car wash sector, innovative solutions such as waterless car washing are emerging to mitigate the impact and promote sustainable practices in the industry.
