In two drought-hit taluks, Mangaluru and Moodbidri, parents and children have opted out of extending the Midday Meal scheme during summer vacations in April and May. The Karnataka government had announced the extension of the midday meal scheme to 223 drought-hit taluks, including these two in Dakshina Kannada (DK). However, officials and other departments involved in the scheme have encountered reluctance from parents and students in these taluks.
Rajesh G, assistant director of the Midday Meal scheme in Dakshina Kannada, explained that there had been no interest in the past whenever the government extended the Midday Meal scheme during vacations in drought-hit areas of the district. Consequently, schools faced uncertainty. To make an informed decision, the government instructed officials to conduct surveys and gather opinions from parents and children regarding the provision of midday meals.
