Mangaluru: The sixth convocation ceremony of Yenepoya University was conducted on a grand note at their campus on Saturday, 22 October. As the students donned their convocation robes and hats, they were more excited to see the college off with their certificate in hand and a lot of memories in their mind.

After a procession of the staff and students led by the college students’ council president concluded with the dignitaries taking their seat on the dais, a brief introduction of YU (Yenepoya University) and it’s achievements over the years was given by Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. M Vijaya Kumar. Soon after, Chancellor of YU Abdulla Kunhi declared the convocation ceremony open.

Dr. K Vijay Raghavan the Secretary for the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India spoke to the gathering and wished great success to University and it’s students in their future endeavors. “Despite all the hurdles that every student gathered here faces, it is best to look around and help others while one can and then your problem will look small in comparison to theirs”, he advised while speaking about the impediments youngsters face these days.

With a more scientific approach to boost the confidence of the students gathered at the event, He said, “We humans are out of the natural selection process since the time we became agents of biological change, including our population growth and even the power to control climate change. We no longer need to survive but we just need to be smart to acknowledge ourselves about our existence. As graduates in each of your own fields, I am sure you will all live a smart life by excelling and not just existing.”

The Deans of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Applied Health and Basic Sciences presented the candidates for convocation to the Chancellor, Abdulla Kunhi. The eight gold medal winners in their respective fields of study were awarded with their medals soon after the presentation of candidates. After all the students received their convocation certificates, Chancellor of YU Abdulla Kunhi closed the ceremony with his best wishes for the students followed by a procession of all students, staff and dignitaries through the aisle back to the entrance of the hall.

Soon after, there were cameras clicking and selfies being taken by students with their degree certificates. It is also a tradition of the students to throw their convocation hats up in the air and many groups of students were seen doing exactly this to mark the successful end of their degree life.

The Vice-Chancellor of YU had earlier apologized for the absence of Bharat Ratna Prof. Dr. C N R Rao who was supposed to grace the occasion with his humble presence and receive his Honoris Causa (Doctor of Science) title which will be conducted on a later date since Dr. Rao’s flight was delayed due to bad weather.
