Head Constable suspended for assault on DYFI activist

Belthangady: The head constable at Venur police station who is now facing accusations of harassing a DYFI activist for being a Muslim has been suspended as per the order of Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda, Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police (SP). The name of the constable is Taranath.

It is reported that DYFI activist Riyaz and his younger brother were stopped by Taranath on the night of October 2 for checking the vehicle documents and upon seeing his name in the driver’s license he started to verbally abuse him for being a Muslim. Later, he was taken to the police station where he was assaulted by the constable, it is said.

Acting on the complaint lodged by DYFI secretary, Santosh Bajal, the SP has initiated an inquiry against the accused.
