In a recent letter to the chief minister and minister of kannada culture, journalist Alvin Mendonca demanded that the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy appoints leaders from all fields as President. 

Ours is a state with multilingual communities and our Government has encouraged most of these linguistic fields through various academies and programs conducted in these academies. 

Besides this, it has also provided an increase in the grant amount in the past few years to help the Sahitya Academies come up with more effective programs. Despite this, there are some who believe that those in the real estate sector have been trying to take advantage of the system. 

The main aim of the academy was to meet the goals and ambitions of the Konkani literati all over the state, and yet, it has failed for several years, all thanks to the fact that it lacks a competent president. 

Language academies often choose eminent personalities like writers, journalists and teachers from various fields to fulfill their purpose. This is why some express displeasure at the recent way in which those in fields like business, who are unable to read Konkani get appointed as president of the academy. 

This is unfair for a language that does not have its own script and still has a long way to develop by way of books and other forms of entertainment. Appointing the wrong people as Presidents will only go on to waste the government’s money and this is what the journalist stated in the letter.
