Mangaluru: Dr. Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW), visited a private hospital in Mangaluru where three students are receiving treatment after an acid attack in Kadaba on March 4. Dr. Chaudhary announced an immediate compensation of Rs 4 lakh per child and additional compensation of up to Rs 20 lakh for corrective surgery, depending on treatment requirements.

Addressing the media, Dr. Chaudhary stated, “I have met with the doctors and parents of the three children. The children are understandably worried about the exams they have missed and have raised concerns about whether they will need to rewrite them. I will be discussing with the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education to facilitate the possibility of the children rewriting their exams.”

Dr. Chaudhary provided an update on the victims’ conditions, stating, “The doctors are currently providing treatment, and the severity of the wounds caused by the acid will determine the course of action. The treatment is progressing well. In the next two weeks, depending on the extent of the injuries, two of the students may require plastic surgery. As the healing progresses, the necessity of plastic surgery will become clearer.”

She expressed gratitude that the acid was contained in a plastic bottle, resulting in a lower concentration and mitigating the severity of injuries. Dr. Chaudhary detailed the injuries, noting that one child has suffered injuries covering approximately 20% of their body, another has injuries ranging from 10-12%, and the third child has less than 10% injuries.

“An immediate compensation of Rs 4 lakh per child will be released, and additional compensation of up to Rs 20 lakh will be provided for corrective surgery, depending on the treatment requirements,” Dr. Chaudhary stated.

Dr. Chaudhary emphasized the importance of schools and universities playing a proactive role in raising awareness and motivating students. She stressed the need for counseling for boys to help them understand the severity of punishment and the consequences of their actions. Dr. Chaudhary pledged to engage with the relevant department to initiate widespread awareness campaigns on issues such as blackmailing and cybercrimes.

She also commended the students for their quick thinking in apprehending the accused, who is just 23 years old.
