Mangaluru: A huge peepal tree, near Bunts Hostel circle was uprooted and relocated to make way for the road widening works here, on Sunday, Dec 9. The tree was replanted near CV Nayak Hall, a few mts away from Bunts Hostel circle.
Though the MCC has initially decided to chop the tree off, stiff opposition from Hindutva outfit compelled the MCC to change the plan and opt for relocating the tree.
The shifting operation was started at around 4 pm on Sunday. A crane was brought in to remove and shift the tree. Traffic was affected due to the process till late evening.
VHP district president Jagadish Shenava welcomed the move of the MCC and expressed his pleasure. “We are not against the development. However, we don’t accept the move of simply cutting the tree. We are happy that the authorities paid heed to our demand and relocated the tree,”he said.
It may be recalled that a banyan tree in Mannagudda area was replanted from Mangala Stadium area to adjacent tree about a decade ago.
