Mangaluru: Looks like the people in Mangalore need to be on the alert with the drastic rise in cyber crime cases in recent days, with a number that went from 68 cases in 2022 to 240 cyber crime cases last year.
It is in the light of this, that city police commissioner Anupam Agarwal warns residents against deceptive links leading to scams, job frauds, forgery and other such security offenses.
Of these, one of the most common is share trading, which has only been surging, by promising vulnerable visitors of high returns, leading them to invest huge amounts of money.
The Dakshina Kannada district alone has recorded 36 such crimes in 2023, which is more than double the number, which stood at 16 in 2022.
In fact, Dakshina Kannada SP Ryshynath suggests more such cases as a lot of them tend to go unreported.
That said, it is clear now that the people of the region need to be wary of all advertisements that come with big promises, and know that these are tricks of fraudsters with their phishing scams and other such games, to rob innocent victims of lakhs of Rupees each day.
While a lot of these pages look professional and legitimate, they are mainly to deceive victims into giving them sensitive information which they can later use for their own benefits.
One example is online marketing platforms that deceive people with offers, prizes and huge discounts, of which one needs to stay away.
Karma never loses an address, they say, but till then, it is good for the innocent to be careful and remain vigilant at all times. It’s a bad world out there.
