Due to the low polling percentage in the last assembly elections in the Mangalore City South constituency, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to prioritize this segment. While Dakshina Kannada district had a polling rate of 77.3% in the 2023 assembly elections, Mangaluru City South recorded only 66%.

In 2018, Mangaluru City South had a polling rate of 68.1% when the district registered a turnout of 77.6%.

The district administration aims to make Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities proactive by targeting city apartment dwellers, who often exhibit urban apathy during elections. Various SVEEP activities will be conducted in the constituency under the supervision of district nodal officer Anandh K, who is also the zilla panchayat CEO.

Girish Nandan M, assistant returning officer for Mangaluru City South constituency, stated that a nodal officer has already been appointed for the constituency. They will analyze previous data to identify polling stations with low voter turnout and plan awareness programs accordingly. Measures will be taken to increase the percentage of polling in all 249 stations in the Mangaluru City South constituency.

Regarding voters settled abroad who continuously fail to participate in elections, steps are being taken to delete such names from the voters’ list.

Dakshina Kannada district has 17,96,826 voters, including 9,19,321 female voters, 8,77,438 male voters, and 67 transgender voters. Mangaluru City South Assembly constituency has 2,49,015 voters including 1,30,093 female, 1,18,875 male, and 47 third-gender voters. The constituency also has 3,925 young voters and 6,908 voters above 85 years old and people with disabilities. The voters’ list update process is ongoing, with the process expected to end ten days before the last date of nomination.
