Mangaluru: Often innocent people dread to approach the police for fear of victimization said acting Chairperson of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission Meera Saxena terming this as a sad development.
She was speaking after inaugurating a one-day training workshop on “Human rights, gender equality and human trafficking”, here on Monday, June 19.
Continuing her speech, Saxena said that often people approach them with audio recording of police officers threatening to implicate them in fraudulent cases and do not allow them to speak their mind. Further she went on to add that the police should end the practice of picking up suspects without serving notice or informing family members.
She also condemned the use of third degree torture on arrested individuals by the police during questioning saying that while they can exercise their discretion on the use of force they should do so staying within the limits of law.
Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Hanumantharaya too spoke on the occasion.
Brinda Adige, Director of Global Concerns India, Vidya Dinker,human rights activist Vidya Dinker, DCP Hanumantharaya and others were present.
