Mangaluru: In response to the ongoing water crisis affecting animals in Mangalore, authorities are taking action by constructing ponds to provide a solution during the summer season.

Forest officer Manjunath N from Sullia has taken the initiative to assist animals facing water scarcity. The crisis is primarily attributed to insufficient monsoon rains, leaving these animals without adequate water sources.

RFO Manjunath N and his team have been working for over a month to rejuvenate existing ponds by clearing them of dirt and filth. While progress has been made, several ponds and wetlands still require excavation. These ponds, once revitalized, can serve as essential water bodies for animals due to the presence of natural springs.

Manjunath N highlighted the success of the pond in Sampaje, which was nearly flat due to silt but now provides a suitable water source for animals.

Two additional ponds in Nellikeri and Nekkare have also been successfully refilled. The department plans to extend this initiative to Alletti and Mandekolu, areas with a significant animal population, including elephants, deer, and Indian bison.

The department has requested funds from the government to complete the crucial task of aiding animals during this water crisis.
