Kasaragod: Sand mafia is very active in the district and has spread its wings to hoodwink authorities in order to rake in huge profits by creating fake documentation. However, the mafia’s plans did not work for long as police raided their very centres of operation, mainly involved in issuing fake permits to ferry loads of sand illegally.
The police team led by Circle inspector Abdul Rahim raided 20 centres and seized three computers and two printers.
Due to restrictions imposed by the district administration on the movement of sand within the district, sand mafia created their own fake documentation to transport loads of sand by evading authorities.
In a recent raid, police had destroyed three boats involved in illegal sand mining in Turti River.
According to police sources, many gangs are active in the district, operating from Kasaragod, transporting sand extracted from river banks and west coast line.
