Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation, which has set target of Rs 200 crore revenue collection during this financial year, intensified its tax collection drive on Wednesday.
Mayor Bhyrappa kick started the tax collection drive from zone 1 on Wednesday. The target for zone 1 this year is Rs 12 crore and already Rs 4 crore have been collected by the officials. On Wednesday during the collection drive they have managed to collect Rs 2 lakh from nearly 20 houses.
Mayor B L Bhyrappa said “In days to come the drive will be further intensified. Wherever we go people are very polite and ready to pay the tax. Though most of them are not paying on the spot, they have assured to pay the tax in just couple of days. There are people who haven’t paid tax for more than five to six years.” He said that if the people fail to pay the tax, water connection will be disconnected.
Last year we had set target of Rs 160 crore and managed to collect Rs 120 crore, this year we have enhanced our target to Rs 200 crore. Already we have collected Rs 75 crore and confident of achieving the said target. There are nearly 1.75 lakh to 2 lakh properties in corporation jurisdiction. Every month just for salary to pourakarmikas and our drivers, we are spending Rs 5 crore. So these taxes are major source of revenues to corporation”. To start with houses will be targeted later commercial establishments will be taken up.
There are nine zones in Mysuru City Corporation and each zone is headed by Assistant Commissioner. The concern zonal officers that ACs have entrusted responsibility to collect revenue taxes and for defaulters they will send notice as warning. People have option to pay money that is tax in installment as well. Water charges and property tax are the main sources of revenue to corporation.
