According to a local website in UAE, beggars are using WhatsApp to collect alms. It is said that they target users by asking them to transfer money into their accounts.

The issue came to light when a woman from UAE complained to police after she received several messages from different numbers asking for financial assistance.  The message contained details of the addresses and account numbers where the money could be transferred to the unknown beggar.

Director General of Policing Operations at Abu Dhabi Police, Amir Mohammed Al Muhairi has warned people to be alert. He stated that the beggars recite heart-wrenching tales which make innocent individuals to fall into their trap. He also advised people to contact police officials in case of any such incident.

Officials said that there are a few lazy people around the place who are trying to take advantage of people’s genoristy during the Holy month of Ramadan.
