Koppal: In a tragic and desperate act, a 45-year-old employee of the Block Education Office (BEO) in Koppal, Sunkappa Koravar, attempted to end his life by self-immolation on Tuesday evening near Ashok Circle.
Sunkappa, who began his service as a peon on compassionate grounds, had risen to the position of First Division Assistant (FDA) over the years. However, sources from the education department revealed that he had been battling alcoholism, which led to a seven-month absence from duty. As a result, his salary was frozen, plunging him into financial hardship.
On Tuesday, Sunkappa approached the BEO office seeking release of his pending salary. However, following the transfer of the Koppal BEO, the office has reportedly been left without a competent officer to resolve such administrative issues.
Overcome with frustration and hopelessness, Sunkappa poured petrol over himself in front of the office and set himself on fire in an apparent bid to pressure the staff. Quick-thinking bystanders and office personnel managed to douse the flames and rushed him to the District Hospital.
Medical authorities confirmed that he suffered 80% burns and remains under close observation for the next 48 hours. His condition is critical and survival chances are uncertain.
A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Koppal City police station, and further investigation is underway.
