Capri’s mayor, Paolo Falco, announced that the ban was “revoked” following the repair of a technical problem that had been preventing water from reaching the island from the mainland.

The ban was initially declared early Saturday, causing several morning ferries en route to the island from Naples and Sorrento to return to port.

Explaining the ban, Falco cited “a real emergency,” noting that while most of the island still had water on Friday, local tanks were “running out” early Saturday.

“The emergency would have been exacerbated by the arrival of the thousands of tourists who visit Capri daily,” he said.

Residents, who were not affected by the ban, were allowed to collect up to 25 liters (6.6 gallons) of drinking water per household from a supply tanker.

Capri, located in the Bay of Naples, is renowned for its white villas, picturesque coastline, and luxury hotels. It has about 13,000 permanent residents but attracts a significant number of day-trippers during the summer months.
