Muscat: A telecommunications firm based in Hong Kong, HGC Global Communications, has reported significant disruptions to communication networks in the Middle East due to the cutting of submarine internet cables in the Red Sea.

According to the company, cables belonging to four major telecom networks have been severed, resulting in considerable disruption to communications in the region. HGC Global Communications estimates that approximately 25 percent of traffic between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East has been affected.

In response to the situation, the company is actively rerouting traffic to mitigate disruptions for its customers. Additionally, they are offering assistance to affected businesses to help manage the impact of the incident.

However, HGC Global Communications did not provide details on the cause of the cable damage or the responsible party.

It’s worth noting that underwater cables play a crucial role in facilitating internet connectivity, with major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta heavily investing in them in recent years. Damage to these submarine networks can lead to widespread internet outages.
