About Maria Philip in whose memory this competition is being held
This debate competition bears the name of Maria Phillip for a reason. Maria Phillip was born in Changanassery, Kerala on April 9, 1964, Maria got her ICSE from Loreto Convent, Ranchi in 1980. She did her Higher Secondary Schooling at Convent of Jesus & Mary, New Delhi and went on to do her B.A. (Hons) in Psychology from Jesus & Mary College, New Delhi.

A born leader, Maria was an excellent orator and an organizer too. Though she was studious, she was equally an active participant in extra-curricular activities as well. She was the Head Girl at Loreto School, Ranchi, Games Captain at Convent of Jesus & Mary School and Secretary of the Debating Club at Jesus & Mary College. The crowning glory for Maria was when she was elected as the “Most Popular Girl” at the All India Cultural Festival ‘Montage’ at Jesus & Mary College in 1984.

Having been always passionate about Human Resources Management, she decided to pursue a Master’s Programme in Personnel Management at the Madras School of Social Work. Unfortunately, during her final year, she was called to God’s abode on 30th September 1986, shattering all her dreams of contributing to the development of the Society. Maria was the inspiration behind her father Prof. J. Phillip founding XIME.

Prof J. Phillip and XIME

As a fulfillment of his late daughter Maria Teresa Philip’s dream, Prof. Philip founded XIME in June 1991, along with a few other acclaimed academicians and practitioners. The evolution of XIME since then into a premier business school of the country is a measure of his institution-building caliber.

A “home-grown guru in management education” was how Prof. J. Philip was described by Mr. Thothathri Raman in a special write-up on him in the feature ‘Heritage’ in an issue of ‘Indian Management’. Prof. J. Philip is the Principal Founder and builder of Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship (XIME) Bangalore, which has campuses in Bengaluru, Kochi, and Chennai. Today XIME is recognized as one of the top Business Schools in the country. He is currently the Chairman of XIME, Bangalore.

Prof. J. Philip has a unique professional career spanning almost 60 years – having started at XLRI in 1960. He became its Dean in 1970. While at XLRI he co-founded the prestigious PGDM Programme of that Institution. After a very productive stint in industry, he returned to academics as Director of IIM Bangalore (1985-91). Of the several distinctive contributions that he has made to Indian Management Education, two unique ones are The founding of the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) in 1988 and The founding of the BRICS Business Schools Association in January 2009 (ABBS). He was honored by the All India Management Association with its prestigious Kewal Nohria Award for Leadership in Management Education in 2011. In 2009 – XLRI honored him with its Alumni Life Time Achievement Award.
