Manipal: A short film titled “Special Gift” to communicate that kidney transplant can be done across blood groups was released by Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, Chairman, Manipal Hospitals and a renowned nephrologist at a function held at the Dr. TMA Pai Hall here on Wednesday. The film, produced by Kasturba Hospital, is about a father donating kidney to his son despite blood groups not complementing each other.

But a transplant is now possible across blood groups through an advanced procedure. The film therefore, is an initiative by Kasturba Hospital to create awareness of this particular aspect of kidney transplant for the benefit of the society. Kasturba Hospital will come up with more such short films to cover various health aspects and clear misconceptions, if any. Dr. Sudarshan Ballal said, “Such awareness initiatives are important as people need to know that transplantation is the best treatment option for kidney failure as the studies show 95 percent success rates”.

Dr. H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor Manipal University released the copies of the short film for free public circulation and viewing. The short film would be made available for viewing/downloading. “Special Gift” can be downloaded/viewed at: https://www.facebook.com/manipal.university.

The “Kasturba Hospital Antibiotic Policy App” was launched by Dr. Poornima Baliga, Pro Vice Chancellor, Manipal University and Dean, KMC Manipal. The free “Kasturba Hospital Antibiotic Policy App” is available for download at PlayStore for the android phones. The app is a product of a six-month research and application by the students of MIT, Manipal–Bikramjeet Singh, Kritika M and Vishtasp Meherhomji of IT batch under the supervision of Hospital Infection Control Department.

Treatment of infections is becoming a challenge everyday due to the evolution of antibiotic resistance following lack of any usage guidelines. This inappropriate use of antibiotics over years, unfortunately, gave rise to antibiotic resistance, which is a serious global problem. Using the Kasturba Hospital Antibiotic Policy App A treating doctor can go through the local sensitivity of the antibiotics and consult the antibiotic policy by pressing quick-search buttons at the Point-of-Care before prescribing treatment for any infection.

Dr. (Col) M Dayananda, Medical Superintendent and COO Kasturba Hospital, Manipal; Dr. Ravindra Prabhu, Head, Dept of Nephrology; Dr. Arun Chawla, Head, Dept of Urology and Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Deputy Medical Superintendent & Prof of Urology were present.
