In response to rising temperatures across the state, Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Department has issued a public health advisory, particularly aimed at vulnerable sections of the population. The government emphasizes the need for extra caution, anticipating that the high temperatures will persist in the coming days.

The advisory, as reported by the Deccan Herald, urges the public to stay hydrated by consuming liquids regularly. Special attention is directed towards vulnerable groups, including infants, pregnant women, individuals with mental and physical conditions, and older people. Recommendations include keeping heads covered to avoid direct sunlight exposure and using oral rehydration solutions (ORS).

With parts of Bengaluru already grappling with water scarcity issues, exacerbated by the prevailing drought conditions, borewells in the city are drying up. Many residents are now reliant on water tankers. However, there are allegations of water tanker operators taking advantage of the crisis by charging exorbitant rates. Residents complain that a 1000-litre water tanker, previously priced between ₹600 to ₹800, is now exceeding ₹2000. Calls have been made for government intervention to enforce price caps on water tankers and prevent overcharging.

Responding to the severe water shortage, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced the State government’s decision to take control of private water tankers in Bengaluru. He stated, “There is a massive water shortage in Bengaluru. The officials of the BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) and BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) are holding meetings on a daily basis to overcome the issue.”
