Farmer suicides cross 1000 mark in state; Mandya rules the roost, DK, Udupi last!

Bengaluru: Believe it or not, Karnataka alone lost over 1,000 farmers in the last ten months.

Battered by unscientific price for the produce, crop failure, financial paucity and the likes, 1,002 farmers ended lives in the state during 2015.

It is said that never in the history of Karnataka have so many farmers ended lives.

Sugar bowl of Karnataka-Mandya witnessed highest bitter cases of farmer suicides standing at 96 cases.

Haveri, Belagavi, Mysuru and Tumakuru districts have witnessed 84, 76, 64 and 59 deaths respectively. Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have ranked last with five cases each.

Out of the deceased farmers, statistics show that 280 of them had borrowed huge loans from nationalised banks, 197 from regional rural banks and 141 from co-op societies.

It is noted that 129 farmers killed themselves after being unable to pay loans for personal reasons and 48 due to defaulting private financial firms.

Likewise, 114 cotton growers and 110 sugarcane growers, 91 paddy growers and 90 maize growers ended life.

As per Department of Agriculture Secretary Manjunath Prasad farmer suicides shot up in 2015 due to loss of both Kharif and Rabi crops.

Government documents reveal that out of 1002 suicides, government accepted only 360 cases and rejected 275 cases. compensation has been dispersed to 354 cases.
